St. Adalbert Hospital in Gdańsk
The project involved the expansion of the existing St. Adalbert Hospital in Gdańsk by a three-story building along with technical infrastructure, installations, and necessary technical connections and site development. In the new wing, the following were created: a modern operating block housing 8 operating rooms, a trauma-orthopedic surgery ward, and a urology ward. The building area is 5,662.90 m2. The height of the expanded building is approximately 11.90 m, length 52.90 m, width 41.60 m. An internal patio was designed in the building to provide daylight to the rooms on the ground floor and first floor. The patio has a square shape with dimensions of about 11.0 m and two stories in height (about 8.00 m).
Functional communication with the existing hospital buildings is ensured by a three-story connector (approximately 15.50 m long and about 8.00 m wide), as well as an extension of the existing connector on the first-floor level measuring 23.10 m in length and 6.7 m in width.
The scope of the investment also included the modernization of the transformer station, oxygen plant, and boiler room.
This was an extremely demanding investment in terms of preparing proper coordination of construction works, which had to be carried out in an actively operating hospital facility. The implementation challenge was to create ventilation and pressure gradation within the operating blocks. This involves the fact that starting from the operating room, the pressure of the supplied air decreases towards the subsequent rooms. All this is to prevent the effect of air being sucked into the operating room. For this process, it was important to use HEPA filters13, ensuring an efficiency level of 99.95%.
St. Adalbert Hospital in Zaspa is the third largest in Gdańsk and simultaneously the third largest hospital in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. It has about 8.98% of all beds in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. Annually, over 10,000 surgical procedures are performed in the operating rooms of the Operating Block of St. Adalbert Hospital.
