Old Town Police Station in Poznań

Old Town Police Station in Poznań

The building of the Poznań – Old Town Police Station, located on the western frontage of Al. Marcinkowskiego, has been comprehensively modernized and renovated. The renovation of the facility was carried out in close cooperation with the city conservator of monuments, due to the character and age of the building. It is a building erected between 1882 and 1884, and formerly housed the Prussian Customs Office.

The building was based on a design by Heinrich Koch, and the main contractor was Otton Hirt. In the interwar period, it housed the Customs Office as well as the Excise and Monopoly Office. The structure, created in the architectural historicism style of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, is characterized by a calm, classical form. Its style refers to the early Italian Renaissance – on its façade there are, among others, Tuscan columns and terracotta friezes that echo the form of arcades. The building was constructed using traditional technology (walls made of solid ceramic brick), covered with a multi-pitched roof with a sheet metal covering, five stories high (basement, high ground floor, first and second floors, attic).

As part of the works, a glazed external elevator and a pavilion for police officers’ briefings were added on the courtyard side. Additionally, the entire unused attic space was developed, which increased the usable area of the entire building. It is there that the city monitoring headquarters is located. Meanwhile, the police station’s back area includes a replaced surface, new garage shelters, and garages.

The police station also employs the most modern network technologies; the building was equipped with a system for automatic management and monitoring of the network infrastructure of the entire facility. This is the first police facility of this kind in Poland where the AIM system has been installed. A digital dispatcher radio communication system was installed along with modern analog-digital radios, which were provided to officers and patrol cars. The system allows operation on digital, encrypted channels within the unit’s jurisdiction.

Thanks to the completed investment, police officers who previously worked in five different locations have returned to the headquarters at Al. Marcinkowskiego 31. The Old Town Police Station is located in the very center of Poznań. The police officers are responsible for over 56,000 residents, but due to the tourist nature of the city center, its monuments, and gastronomy, the number of people temporarily staying in the Old Town area exceeds the number of permanent residents several times over.
