Collegium Heliodori Święcicki UAM in Poznań
An exceptional building of the Poznań Adam Mickiewicz University from the early 20th century representing the neo-Renaissance style, listed in the register of monuments. It currently serves students and staff of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Karol Marcinkowski Medical University in Poznań.
The building at the intersection of Śniadeckich, Grunwaldzka 6, and Święcickiego streets was designed by Edward Madurowicz and Roger Sławski. The cornerstone for the construction of the building was laid in 1920. The facility was initially intended to serve as the seat of the Poznań University of Technology, but opposition from the ministry caused the construction work to be halted.
Ultimately, the building was completed in 1929. It served as the Government Palace, one of the pavilions during the General National Exhibition. After the conclusion of the PeWuKa, the building was handed over to the University of Poznań.
Unlike many other projects, to preserve the historic facade, thermal modernization was carried out using the “from the inside” method, meaning the building was insulated from the inside. All this was done to avoid any damage to the historic facade. As a result, energy consumption was significantly reduced, which contributed to a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and improved air quality.
Additionally, the central heating system was replaced along with the modernization of the heat node and the mechanical ventilation system. The building’s lighting was also replaced with LED lighting, which consumes significantly less energy than traditional light sources. Photovoltaic panels, which constitute a renewable energy source, were installed on the roof.
All works were carried out according to a conservation project and under the supervision of the Municipal Conservator of Monuments. The Poznań facility has the chance, in the coming years, to become one of the best examples of modernization of historic buildings from the interwar period.
